Twin vs Twin XL: Five Inches of Length, Same Width
Twin and Twin XL are both nominally 38 inches wide. Twin XL adds five inches of length, from 75 to 80, while keeping the same width.

The difference is entirely at the ends
The nominal mattress areas are 2,850 square inches for a twin and 3,040 for a Twin XL. The increase is about 6.7%, all from the extra length. Twin XL does not give a single sleeper more room to spread sideways.
Compare the actual length you use on your current mattress and how your pillow and bedding sit. A body-height rule of thumb cannot account for all those preferences. If width is the problem, changing from twin to Twin XL does not address it.
How a five-inch change affects a small room
With a four-inch total frame allowance per dimension, a twin footprint is 42 × 79 inches and a Twin XL 42 × 84. The side walkways are the same in any given room; the foot walkway is five inches shorter for the XL when the head is against the wall.
This can matter near a desk chair, a wardrobe door or a narrow passage at the end of the bed. A bed placed against a side wall has a different distribution of usable walking space from the centered arrangement shown in our tool. Measure the route you intend to use rather than treating the sketch as a complete room design.
Bedding and bed frames need an exact match
An 80-inch mattress is longer than a 75-inch support surface. Check whether the frame or platform is explicitly designed for Twin XL; do not assume an open foot end makes the combination suitable. The mattress maker may also specify center support, slat spacing or other construction details.
Check fitted-sheet and protector measurements separately from top covers. Also look at mattress height. Two mattresses can have the same width and length but require different pocket depths. That detail is easy to overlook when buying a size change as a bundle.
Two Twin XL mattresses make a different arrangement
Two nominal 38 × 80-inch Twin XL mattresses placed side by side form a 76 × 80-inch footprint, the same nominal size as a standard king. The resulting center seam and separate support surfaces are important differences.
That does not mean any two twin mattresses form a standard king: two 75-inch-long twins are still only 75 inches long. If you are building a split setup, price both mattresses, the support system, the intended bedding and any connectors as one complete project.
