Queen vs King: Dimensions, Room Fit & Space Per Person

A king adds 16 inches of width to a queen, with the same 80-inch length. For two sleepers that is eight more inches each, before allowing for how either person actually sleeps.

What those extra 16 inches change

A queen occupies 4,800 square inches of mattress area. A king occupies 6,080, an increase of 26.7%. That increase is entirely in the width: buying a king does not add length. If the issue with your present bed is your feet reaching the end, compare the length of other options instead of assuming a larger size name solves it.

Dividing the nominal width equally gives 30 inches per person on a queen and 38 on a king. This is a geometric comparison, not a comfort rating. A pet, a central gap or a partner who uses more than half the bed changes the usable space. Measure your current arrangement to decide whether the extra width addresses your actual problem.

What happens in a 12-by-12-foot room?

With a frame allowance of four inches added to both overall dimensions, the queen footprint is 64 × 84 inches and the king footprint is 80 × 84. Centered across a 144-inch-wide room, the queen leaves 40 inches at each side; the king leaves 32. Both leave 60 inches at the foot when the head is against the wall.

A change that looks modest on a floor plan can matter beside a wardrobe, dresser or door. Our illustration leaves furniture out so you can see the basic geometry. Mark the proposed outer frame on the actual floor and open every nearby door or drawer before ordering.

Compare the cost of the whole change

Put the king and queen checkout prices for the same model beside each other. Then add any frame, foundation, protector and bedding you would need to replace. These costs vary by seller and setup; the historical prices in our catalog are not current quotes.

Use the cost-per-night tool with your expected use period to put a price difference in context. A small daily difference can still be a substantial upfront outlay. Decide whether the extra width is useful before spreading its cost over many years.

Check the delivery route as well as the bedroom

Bedroom clearance and delivery clearance are different measurements. Check the packaged or uncompressed dimensions, the building entrance, stair turns and the seller’s delivery arrangements. A compressed box may have a different handling plan from a model delivered at full size.

If a single king is difficult to handle, a split king is another arrangement to investigate. Two nominal Twin XL mattresses form the same 76 × 80-inch sleeping footprint, with a center seam and different bedding considerations. That is a separate choice from whether a king-size footprint suits the room.

Questions about this comparison

Is a king longer than a queen?

No. The nominal US dimensions used here give both an 80-inch length. A king is 16 inches wider.

Can I use my queen frame for a king?

A frame must support the exact mattress size and meet the model’s support requirements. Do not assume a queen frame can be expanded or safely used for a king; check the frame specification.
