Split King vs King: Same Footprint, Different Setup
A split king usually means two Twin XL mattresses side by side. Together they have the same nominal 76 × 80-inch footprint as one standard king, with a seam between the two mattresses.
| Measurement | King | Split king (2 × Twin XL) |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 76″ | 76″ |
| Length | 80″ | 80″ |
| Mattress area | 6,080 sq in | 6,080 sq in |
| Equal width per sleeper (two) | 38″ | 38″ |

Same outer dimensions, two separate pieces
A nominal Twin XL is 38 × 80 inches. Placing two side by side doubles the width to 76 inches while keeping the 80-inch length. The combined mattress area is 6,080 square inches, the same as one standard king. A split king is not an extra-large king.
Each side gives one sleeper a nominal 38-inch width. The seam may matter to someone who uses the center of the bed. We have not tested the feel of connectors, bridges or any specific split model, so do not treat equal outer dimensions as a promise that the sleeping experience will be identical.
Separate adjustment requires a compatible system
A pair of compatible adjustable bases may let each side move separately. That depends on the exact bases, controls and mattress models. Splitting the mattress alone does not give an ordinary fixed frame independent head or foot adjustment.
Ask the seller whether each mattress is approved for the intended base, whether the bases can be synchronized, and what clearances are required. Check whether a quoted split king package includes both mattresses and both bases, or only one component of the system.
Plan the bedding and the middle gap
Separate mattress movement typically calls for fitted bedding that can accommodate each side. Check the actual sheet, protector and mattress-height dimensions rather than assuming that all items marketed as king fit the intended arrangement. A shared top cover is a separate purchase decision.
Ask how the bases are kept aligned and whether a connector is recommended or allowed. A bridge or topper can change how the seam feels, but it can also affect separate movement or the returnability of accessories. Confirm the full setup instead of adding parts after the mattresses arrive.
Compare two complete purchase quotes
Price a single king with its intended foundation and services, then price both halves of the split setup with both supports and the necessary bedding. Compare delivery, setup and return costs at the order level. A per-half price can be misleading if it is read as a full-system price.
For each quote, confirm whether both halves have the same trial start date and whether a return or exchange applies to one side or both. Adjustable bases and bedding may have different return rules from mattresses. Our buying checklist separates those questions so you can keep the answers with the order.
Questions about this comparison
Is a split king wider than a king?
Not in the nominal setup shown here: two 38-inch Twin XL mattresses together are 76 inches wide, matching a standard king.
Can I turn any king into a split king?
A split setup uses two separate mattresses and a compatible support arrangement. A single king mattress does not become independently adjustable simply because the base is split.
